Gas Chromatography Training

DATE                     : 15TH JANUARY 2020 – 16TH JANUARY 2020

TIME                     : 9 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

LOCATION          : MAKMAL INTRSUMENTASI MAKANAN

The Gas Chromatography training had been for two days at Makmal Instrumentasi Makanan. The training course introduces the Agilent MSD ChemStation software for both instrument control, data acquisition and analysis. The courses also covered PC and data system installation, set-up and maintenance which also includes types of tuning methods, creating scan and SIM methods, Retention Time Locking (RTL), reports, an introduction to macros and method maintenance. The participants also get to learned on how to analyse individual samples and create sequences for analysing multiple samples.

GC is a key analytical technique in chemistry and food technology. This technique is widely used in analysis of food composition, natural products, food additives, flavor and aroma components, a variety of transformation products, and contaminants, such as pesticides, fumigants, environmental pollutants, natural toxins, veterinary drugs, and packaging materials. Thus, this training is practically essential to university students and staffs.

Fourier Transform Infrared -FTIR Spectophotometer Training

DATE                     : 25TH FEBRUARY 2020

TIME                     : 9 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

LOCATION          : MAKMAL GUNASAMA KIMIA 1

The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometer training had be held on 25th February 2020 at Makmal Gunasama Kimia 1 to university’s staffs and students. The fundamental course provided instruction in theory, instrumentation, maintenance, data acquisition software, sample preparation and the use of various accessories which covered instrument maintenance, calibration and the preparation of solid and liquids.

FTIR is one of the most important and emerging tool used for analyzing compund for different quality parameters. This technique has substantial potential as a quantitative quality control tool for the food industry. FTIR analysis methods are convenient, rapid and automatable, and in conjunction with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technology, dramatically simplify sample handling. Thus, this training provides basic knowledge on how to operate this instrument as well as basic troubleshooting.

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) Training

DATE                     : 29TH JUNE 2020 – 30TH JUNE 2020

TIME                     : 9 a.m to 5.00 p.m.

LOCATION          : MAKMAL INTRSUMENTASI MAKANAN

The two-days training course for Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) had been held on 29th June 2020 to 30th June 2020 at Food Instrumentation Lab, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. The training had been given by Ms. Lai Yi Kuan from Agilent Technologies. The purpose of this training is to provide the university staffs and students’ knowledge and skills needed for optimizing and troubleshooting basic flame atomic absorption. The basic theory and laboratory exercises includes experiments in controlling interferences as well as procedures for developing methods also had been covered in the course. Besides, the participants also had been introduced to hardware optimization and calibration, setting up the element parameter file, maintenance procedures, background correction, and flame emission analysis.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a technique for determining the elemental composition of an analyte present in samples by measuring the absorbed radiation by the chemical element of interest. AAS is a relatively simple and low-cost technique with high sensitivity and precision that are useful for wide applications including food technology. Thus, this training helps user to get familiarize with instrument and know the basic knowledge on how to use it.
