Mathematics and Statistics
Head of Department
Dr. Sabariah binti Saharan
Recent years have witnessed complex challenges faced by humanity: climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and poverty. To address these challenges, science and technology are the keys. As sustainability needs diversity, mathematics and statistics are also parts of the equations needed. Thus, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is designed to fulfil these needs. Currently, there are 22 academic staff of Mathematics panel and 13 academic staff of Statistics panel, with 4 assistant engineers. Laboratory facilities under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics include 2 labs for Mathematics and 2 labs for Statistics, equipped with the smart classroom with appropriate Mathematics and Statistics software, like Matlab, Maple, etc.
Comprising of scholars dedicated to research and instruction, we aim to produce top-notch students with excellent competencies. To meet the current needs, we focus on the technological and industrial aspects of mathematics and statistics in preparing our students for their future endeavours. Ranging from Bachelor’s Degree to PhD, we offer a broad array of options for our students to enjoy. Introductory- and intermediate-level courses with the options of five elective courses will ensure the undergraduates to earn their Bachelor’s Degree.
There are two (2) undergraduate degree programmes under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which are: Bachelor of Industrial Statistics and Bachelor of Technology Mathematics. Both programmes introduce blends of statistics and industry and mathematics and technology which provide necessary quantitative tools for modern industrial and technologies towards the mathematical and statistical applications. The combination of both provides a variety of important applications such as pure and applied mathematics, optimisation, operational research, predicting and forecasting, medical statistics and many more which relates to the requirements for each programme. The study involves developing problem-solving skills and applying them in technology and industrial sector for better developments. Skill and knowledge gained from the study can be used to solve a broad range of issues related to technology development and industrial matters. Our programmes make use of the mathematical methods in technology and statistical method in industrial-related for decision making with strong virtuous criteria.
For those in need of further professional training, Master’s Degree is the option. Our scholars and experts are always on deck to steer our PhD candidates towards excellence in their respective researches. We offer post-graduate programmes such as MSc by research, MSc by course work and PhD Science (research). Variety of expertise among the academic staff of our department ensures the quality of professionals produce academically and technically.
