Department of Physics and Chemistry

Head of Department:

Dr. Ahmad Hadi bin Ali

Department of Physics and Chemistry (JFK) consists of 25 academics and 8 non-academic staffs. To date, JFK runs a handful of postgraduate programmes, namely Doctor of Philosophy in Science (By Research), Master of Science (By Research), Master of Science (Materials Chemistry) mix-mode, as well as an undergraduate program; Bachelor of Science (Applied Physics) with Honours. Our academicians are all passionate researchers in a wide range of disciplines. Students enrolled with the department are expected to develop a spirit of scholarly enthusiasm (intellectually rigor) through making most of the opportunities available to them within and beyond the formal lesson. The department also aims towards developing within each student the ability to conduct creative and innovative scientific research.

Up till April 2018, total enrolments of undergraduate and postgraduate students under JFK are 208 and 48 respectively. Our postgraduate students are actively doing research on not only fundamental physics and chemistry but also applied sciences ranging from environmental to materials and nanotechnology. The department also has excellent facilities and technology that meet undergraduate and postgraduate needs as well as meeting the international academic standard. Laboratory facilities under the department include Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Scanning Helium Ion Microscopy, Ellipsometry, Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Tera-Hertz Ti: Sapphire Laser, X-ray Diffraction, and High-Pure Germanium (HPGe).

With the aid of the state-of-the-art facilities and analytical technique, the department is committed to striving for the best to achieve high-quality research and graduates. This is in parallel with the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology’s vision and mission to produce competent science and technology professionals through holistic and balanced academic and research program.
